John McEnroe a big fan of Carlos Alcaraz's 120 Mac Attack trainers worn during US Open win

Tennis legend John McEnroe expressed his delight at seeing Carlos Alcaraz rock up at the US Open wearing his Mac Attack trainers.

The popular £120-a-pair Nike trainers are one of the most iconic tennis shoes first introduced in 1984 and worn by seven-time grand slam winner McEnroe.

After beating 12th-seed Alexander Zverev, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to seal a place in the semi-finals, Alcaraz then put them on for post-match interview, which happened to be with Patrick McEnroe, younger brother to John.

"First of all, Carlos, my brother wanted me to tell you that he loved your sneaker," he began.

Carlos laughed and then replied: “Thank you very much. It’s a good one, right?”

“That’s old school. That’s old Johnny Mac,” Patrick added of his brother, who was known as a hot head in his heyday, winning the US Open four times between 1979 and 1984.

The shoes became famous for being McEnroe's choice of footwear in his playing days.

They were never released again until recently.

Travis Scott and LeBron James have since been spotted donning the famed footwear, with Alcaraz now following suit.

Unlike at Wimbledon, where strict rules prevent players from wearing anything other than white, Alcaraz was free to wear what he wanted, unlike Nick Kyrgios who got in trouble for his red Jordan's.
